From Mass Movements Undermined (Research paper)

Collaborative movements and progressive organizations usually represent the voice of a body of people. Although some movements have conservative interests, most usually have the intentions to progress society or the conditions of a community. Mass movements are seen as threats because of their influence of power. They are repressed by elite democrats through illegal and legal means, and give a voice to a mass public that is often ignored. Mass movements and grassroots organizations are undermined by government and elite democrats in order to prohibit the people from reclaiming too much power and to maintain a status of superiority. [...] Getting involved in organizations that fight for social change transfers a certain amount of power from the elite to the people. Collectively, an organization (or organizations) could apply enough pressure to their elite representatives and influence future decisions made. As in the first law of thermodynamics, energy can only be transferred and transformed but not destroyed, the same applies to power. Power can shift from one entity to another, but it is never completely lost. If too much power shifts to the people, then the elite lose some; this is the basis for their fear and defense.
