A special message
from Bill ...
The task of the writer sounds like a simple one: pick a
subject, expound on it and put pen to paper (or digits to plastic, as the case
may be). But it's really not that easy.
A writer must be relevant. Writing about your cat's recent hairball attack may
be interesting to you, but it probably won't get more than a cursory glance
form the reading public.
A writer must be concise, yet be able to stimulate the reader's imagination.
A writer must show skill and craftsmanship without talking down to the reader.
Ten syllable words may make you feel smart, but you gain nothing making the
reader feel stupid.
And lastly, a writer must be true to the subject matter. If you are hired to
write about automobiles, stick to automobiles. Your client doesn't need to know
who you plan to vote for or why, and they probably don't care.
My writing style is derived from a voracious reading appetite and a purely egotistical
desire to be heard. I have a background in stand-up and improv/sketch comedy
and I try to include wit and flavor in every article I write.
To sum it all up, I love to express myself. Writing is not an avocation for me;
it is a requisite. I MUST write and I think I do it well.
